Quality of LifeSport - A District on the Up
For Sir Winston Churchill with his consistent "No sports" maxim the Duchy of Lauenburg
would definitely not have been the right region. The possibilities for participation
in sport, both indoors and out, and to actively chill out after work, are extraordinarily
varied. A ride into the country - always an experience. Numerous stud farms and stables
transform the Lauenburg countryside into a riders' landscape. Five golf courses tempt
you onto manicured greens.

A dense network of cycle paths and quiet roads offer ambitious cyclists and tourers
an unlimited choice. More than over 160 sports clubs make the Duchy of Lauenburg one of
the foremost sporting regions in the North. And then there is the water: sailing, canoeing,
pedal boats and angling. An evening turn on the lake or canal, peace and quiet whilst
fishing for pike and eel. Or perhaps a stroll in the Lauenburg Lakes National Park?
That is the ultimate relaxation.
Cyclists Navigate by Satellie
Whoever wants to go cycle touring in the Duchy of Lauenburg County always knows
how far it is - thanks to satellite navigation. As the first tourist region in Northern
Germany, the Duchy's Marketing Service Company (HLMS) offers touring with GPS.
|
|
| Whether on a tour through the Lauenburg Lakes National Park, along the
Elbe-Lübeck canal or around the Ratzeburg Lake, you always know your position exactly.
No fumbling for the map. Simply explore new tracks and be sure to find your way back to
the main route. Ideal for all those who want to be off the beaten track, be it
cycleways, bridle paths or footpaths. There are also several day tours on offer between
the Ratzeburg Lake, Schaal Lake and the Old Salt Road. "The tours have been cycled and
taken up directly from the landscape. That has the advantage that our recordings are more
precise than might be generated by the computer" explains Günter Schmidt, Head of the HLMS,
which can book tours and hire out the GPS handsets.

Rowing Academy on the Gold Course
Relaxation on the water is the first thing, competitive sport the other.
It is little wonder that right here in the Duchy of Lauenburg one of the top class
international rowing performance centres was founded. Closely linked with the name
of Karl Adam (1912-1976) is the Ratzeburg Rowing Academy. The "Rowing Professor",
at home a mathematics, physics and sports teacher, but who as a layman thought up
his own training methods and led numerous boat crews such as the legendary German - eights
to Olympic and World titles.
|
| Even double Olympic winner and World Champion in quadruple skulls Meike Evers.
"The training conditions are really ideal" says the sportswoman from the Ratzeburg Rowing Club.
"With the Rowing Academy and the Ratzeburg Lakes you have the best conditions for top class training."
Results are the motivating factor. Also active participants in other types of sport. On a regular
basis names of top sports people appear in the winners' lists at international competitions.
|
 |
| Even as organisers the sports clubs have made a name for themselves
across every border. Whether it is a rowing regatta, the oldest fencing tournament
in Germany or a triathlon competition - top class sportsmen and women like coming to the
Duchy of Lauenburg County.
