| For 50 years research has been taking place at the highest level in The Duchy: GKSS in Geesthacht - one of 15 national organisations of the "Hermann von Helmholtz" community of German research centres - undertakes scientific and technical research and development work in material and coastal research and regenerative medicine. With other scientific institutions the GKSS with over 700 employees provides the impetus for the sustainable shaping of the future (especially in the areas of energy saving and conservation of resources) - and for the foundation of new enterprises. |  |

Every year around 250 visiting researchers from all over the world use the technical and scientific infrastructure of the GKSS which helps train the scientific young people with over 60 male and female doctorate students. Furthermore the GKSS research centre is an important employer for young people in this region: |

At the moment 50 apprentices are starting on the professional ladder And in their own pupil lab,
the "quantum leap", they are working successfully to inspire the young generation for
research. In over four years more than 13,000 pupils experiment here - on the GKSS research topics
of fuel cell and water analysis. |
